Cedar Grove Cemetery

Mass outside All Souls Chapel at Cedar Grove Cemetery, c1920s.

Soon after the University’s founding, Fr. Sorin dedicated land for a Catholic cemetery on University grounds. In its early days, Cedar Grove Cemetery was run by the Congregation of Holy Cross. It was a public Catholic cemetery until 1977, when ownership and responsibility was transferred from Holy Cross to the University. Today it is a private cemetery open only to Notre Dame faculty, staff, and retirees with the requisite years of service.
